Blackberry and Apple Betty (4)

Another seasonal recipe from Nigel Slater’s ” Tender Volume 2″. A betty is a crumble made by pouring melted butter and syrup over a mixture of sugar and breadcrumbs.

  1. Preheat the oven to 190 C, 170 Fan, Gas 5.
  2. Cut the apples into large chunks, put them in a pan and toss with the butter and a couple of tablespoons water over a moderate heat.
  3. When they start to soften but are still keeping their shape drop in the blackberries then tip the fruit into a 1.5 litre baking dish.
  4. Mix the crumbs and sugar and cover the fruit loosely with the mixture. Melt the butter and syrup in a small pan, then pour this over the crumbs making certain to soak them all.
  5. Bake for 35 minutes until the apple is soft and the crumbs are golden and crisp.
